Story

Hi Everyone,

You may have heard that Felicity, our 7yo daughter, is currently having treatment at the Royal Children's Hospital. Yep it does suck..... eggs!

The care she has received there has been outstanding!

This recent event in our family has really highlighted how lucky we are as Melbournians. We have one of the finest Paediatric Medical Institutions in the world on our doorstep. I don't think we appreciate just how highly regarded it is internationally.

The thoughtful design of new Hospital site is just awesome. Meerkats and Sharks included!

Raising money for the Royal Children's Hospital is just such a worthy cause. How bizarre that the timing of Felicity's illness aligns so well with the Good Friday Appeal.

One thing that strikes me as cool is the way the hospital doesn't discriminate. You could be loaded with the best health insurance available, or be on the poverty line. Everyone gets treated the same with uniform excellence. Every kid gets the best chance to recover from their adversity. Everyone gets a private room as well.

Here's a snapshot of Felicity's current situation...

In January we were having a 2 week family break in the country. Felicity was vaguely unwell with some reduced appetite and more fatigue when on walks. She'd just lost a bit of her natural spark. Each day she would assure us that she was improving. After the Australia Day weekend we booked her into her GP who was really thorough. Straight away she detected an absence of breath sounds on one side of her chest. There was also a fever. Diagnosis was pneumonia, which surprised us as she really hadn't been coughing. However she suggested we get a chest X-ray all the same. We got the X-ray within the hour, and were advised to get to a hospital as she would probably need IV antibiotics rather than the oral ones the GP had prescribed. Another hour later the doctors at the Children's ED had determined it was actually a tumour in her chest.

Over the next 5 days in hospital Felicity had a heap of tests including some biopsies under a general anaesthetic. A malignancy was confirmed. She has been an absolute trooper. Always polite, interested and friendly. We are just so proud.

The next step was to find out if there was any spread. She had a PET scan. A nerve racking day, but it resulted in good news - no spread. The Oncologist felt Felicity could now have surgery, but the Surgeons felt that the growth was just a bit too big. The thing with surgery for tumours is that you need to remove them as one chunk, as to assess for clear resection margins. Big chunks in the chest don't easily fit though the gaps between little ribs.

Hence it's been decided Felicity will now have chemotherapy to shrink the tumour down, so that the surgery is less traumatic. It starts this week with a general anaesthetic to insert a special IV line. Unfortunately there will be the classic side effects including loss of hair. Felicity just adores styling her hair, and we sadly dropped this bombshell last night.

We're desperately hoping the chemo shrinks this sucker down, and the ensuing surgery removes it completely!

* ps we've been advised with kids it's best to avoid the "C" word and refer to it as a growth. Generally it's better to keep the language positive like referring to "chemo" as "medicine". But it is also important to remain honest with the all the kids and to not avoid the topic.

Felicity about to sample some hospital food. Turns out that their porridge ain't great!

3 peas in a pod - Fred 2yo, Dominic 9yo, and Felicity 7yo

So we're embarking on the "Run for the Kids" on Sunday 20th March 2016

Dan will do the 16km run. Entered in the yellow group 7.20am (that group intends to run the whole way). I certainly won't be breaking any land speed records. God knows when I'll have time to train.

Jane will do the 5km walk with Fred and possibly Felicity with assistance. They're entered in the White group 8.25am (that group walks casually).

Dom will do the 5km jog. Entered in the purple group 8.25am (that group is for joggers and fast walkers). Possibly Dom will walk part of the way.

There's a couple of things you can do to help this cause...

  • Join us in the run/walk. Can be the the 5km run/walk or the 16km run. It's in exactly 6 weeks time so there is plenty of time to do some training. Feel free to enter any colour group. When entering, choose to join Team Felicity and use the password Felicity. There's a chance I'll organise T-shirts for a nominal cost, but no guarantee. Otherwise perhaps wear something in teal or aqua (Felicity's favourite colour). Now don't let the fear of aches, pains and unfitness stop you. Think of the crap Felicity has to endure! Online entries close Friday 4th of March.

  • Direct any fundraising to Team Felicity. Please note 100% of donations goes to the hospital. After you've entered, click on "Start Fundraising" in the top menu. Create an "individual" fundraising page using your own name. Next click on "Team Fundraising" in the top menu. Search for Team Felicity and click on "join".

  • Anyone can click the green Donate button on this page to make a tax deductible donation to the Royal Children's Hospital. You will be emailed a receipt, as well as some sensational complements (if you donate via the Team Felicity page). Dig deep!

  • Spread the word about this cause. Anyone is welcome to join Team Felicity in the run. Anyone is welcome to donate. Here's the direct link for this webpage that can be copied and emailed, or facebooked (I'm clueless with Facebook). Perhaps avoid passing on personal email addresses.

* Jane and I would also like to express our gratitude for the many beautiful messages of support and acts of kindness towards our family.

* Also we appreciate that many of you may have already donated to the Royal Children's Hospital via the "Relaython" at Dom's Little Athletics. The response was astonishing, and really gave us a lift. As I write this, Dom has raised a massive $11,064.15. Amazingly this amount was raised within 48 hours. Feel free to click on the link below to see some pics of Dom's run.

Thankyou,

Dan, Jane, Dominic, Felicity and Fred Moylan
